May Newsletter

2nd Grade

We're on the homeward stretch now. Less than two months of school to go. Second graders are gearing up to finish this year strong!

During the month of May we will be working on the following:

  • Math: Spatial Sense - Students will understand the terms congruent, symmetry, slide/flip/turn and reflection. From here we will go on to patterns and Algebra - we will describe, extend, make and transfer patterns.
  • Reading/Language Arts: We are beginning our 6th Unit - All Aboard which focuses on the genres of narrative fiction and expository fiction. Students will be focusing on determining the main idea of their readings; what types of characters are in their stories; whether something is a fact or opinion; how graphic resources are used in stories and what a prologue to a story is all about. Fluency continues to be a key feature of our every day learning process.
  • Our word study in Language Arts will include the study of singular and plural pronouns, subject and object pronouns, and the prefixes un-, dis-, re-. Students will learn what a glossary is for and how to use one. We continue to work on the writing process and students will write invitations, letters, creative stories and other types of writings during the month of May.
  • Social Studies: We're just finishing up our unit on "Discovering Our Past." We will be moving into "People, Places and Holidays." In this unit we will learn about many special Americans, special places in the United States, special holidays that Americans celebrate, how people around the world celebrate holidays and how a group from two countries celebrated together.
  • Science: We are still in our unit on the movement of things and will be learning about how magnets, ramps/levers, muscles and bones all move things. From here we'll move into a unit about the Earth and the sky.
  • Religion: Celebrating Peace and Service is the subject of our next unit. We will be talking about the two Sacraments of Service (Holy Orders and Matrimony); how we celebrate peace within the Church and with each other; and what social justice is all about (including the role we play as Christians).
  • Again, thank you for your continued support of our class. Please continue to encourage your child to work on their math facts and to read whenever they have the opportunity.

Happy First Communion to all those students (and their families) who are making their First Communion this month!

What You Need to Know about Grade 2

Students need to read every day -- preferably to someone (either a parent/relative or older sibling).

Students who are having difficulty with speech need to be reminded to pronounce letters properly if they are able to. (At this stage students are spelling based on what they hear themselves say...if they hear the word incorrectly, they are likely to spell incorrectly).

Learning math facts is critical at this point. We will be moving into two-digit addition and subtraction soon and students will need to quickly access their math facts. Students should practice using flash cards or any other method (there are lots of math games) to learn their facts.

Students are learning to read directions to complete work. It is important that when papers are brought home that they are encouraged to read them to someone.

Homework for second graders is 30 minutes per night (No homework on Fridays :.) Some days students will have a worksheet or some other project to work on. If they finish this before the 30 minutes are up they are to read for the remainder of the time. Some nights reading will be the only assignment (we often have follow up work based on the night's reading).

The homework assignment is listed on the chalkboard every day and students are to record this in their assignment books. Parents are to initial this book each night after reviewing the child's homework. If your child takes longer than 30 minutes to complete his/her homework please let me know. Additionally, if your child really struggles through the homework, please note that in their assignment book. Thank you.
